What Size Lawn Mower Do I Need?

The right mower size follows your mowable grass and your route through it, not just the acreage on a real-estate listing.

Measure the lawn, not the lot

A one-acre lot can have far less than an acre of grass once you subtract the house, driveway, beds, and trees. Walk the mowing route before shopping. That tells you more than the address listing ever will.

Small and broken-up lawns

A compact walk-behind mower is usually the sensible choice where gates, beds, and trees create constant turns. A wide deck sounds faster, but not if you spend the whole time backing up and repositioning it.

Open medium lawns

As open grass increases, a full-size walk-behind and self-propelled drive start making more sense. Our half-acre mower guide covers that middle ground in detail.

Large, open properties

If mowing time is becoming the problem, compare riding mowers and zero-turns. Storage, maintenance, and turning room still count. More machine is not automatically a better use of your garage.
