Honda HRX-BE Review: Battery Cost, Runtime, and Who It Fits

The HRX-BE is an interesting purchase for someone who likes Honda mowers but wants to stop managing gasoline. The name also creates a trap: this is not the old gas HRX with a battery added to start its engine. It is a battery-powered mower.

The Short Answer
I’d shortlist the HRX-BE if I wanted its mowing and collection controls and could confirm that the complete battery setup suits my lawn. I would price additional battery capacity before buying, not after the first unfinished mowing session.
The other check is service. Ask the shop whether it supports this exact battery model. Familiarity with older Honda gas engines isn’t the same as an answer about an electric mower repair.

Honda’s HRX-BE page also describes a NeXite deck, MicroCut twin blades, adjustable Versamow collection, and blade-off powered transport. These features are the current machine’s purchase case. The gas-engine history isn’t a substitute for evaluating them.
A second bay doesn’t mean a second battery
The Amazon title and configuration identify one included 12Ah battery. If an advertisement emphasizes the longer runtime available with two packs, check whether the offer supplies both.
For a hypothetical 55-minute active mowing route, a 45-minute advertised figure would already leave a ten-minute gap before allowing for conditions. That isn’t a prediction of what the Honda will do. It shows why a buyer should not build a no-break routine around the most optimistic interpretation of a runtime claim.

Charging changes the ownership routine
A long standard charging time is easy to accommodate when you charge between weekly sessions. It matters much more if you expect to recharge during the same afternoon.
Think through where charging will happen, whether you remember to do it, and what happens when another family member uses the mower first. Don’t pay for a faster charger simply because it exists. Buy it when it changes a real inconvenience in your routine.
I’d also get a current replacement-battery price. It belongs in the ownership decision even if I don’t expect to replace the battery soon. There is little value in calling a mower a long-term purchase while ignoring a major replaceable component.
What the owner discussions tell us
In an HRX-BE owner discussion, early owners describe satisfaction with cutting and construction, while others ask about runtime, spare-battery expense, and whether the battery system will hold up. Those are sensible questions. The mixed thread also discusses other Honda models, so it should not be treated as a single-model survey.
The positive early impressions support trying the mower. They cannot establish ten or fifteen years of durability. Honda announced November 2025 availability for the range; that long ownership record does not yet exist in September 2026.
I’d ask early owners about the lawn size, cutting conditions, exact battery setup, and charging routine. Those details make a favorable or unfavorable report useful to another buyer.
Who should compare something else?
If you already own enough compatible batteries for another brand, price that brand’s mower first. Switching needs a benefit that you actually value.
If the job takes too long because of cutting width, the HRX-BE doesn’t turn a normal walk-behind into a wide mower. Measure the grass area and use our mower-sizing guide before assuming more battery capacity is the entire answer.
I’d also pause if nearby shops couldn’t tell me how service works. That’s a reason to resolve support before purchase, not evidence that every Honda battery owner will have trouble.
My verdict
The HRX-BE deserves consideration for its current features and a battery routine that fits the buyer. It doesn’t deserve an automatic lifetime recommendation inherited from a different power source.
I’d compare the full kit and any needed extra capacity, try the controls, and get a concrete service answer. If those fit, Honda stays on my shortlist. If they don’t, the familiar badge doesn’t fix the mismatch.
