Push vs. Self-Propelled Lawn Mower: Is Self-Propelled Worth It?
Self-propelled drive is not a must-have for every lawn, but it stops feeling optional once the route gets long or the yard starts working against you.
The short answer
For a small, flat yard, a push mower is usually enough. It is lighter, simpler, and cheaper. Once the lawn gets bigger, the route gets longer, or you have a hill to climb every week, self-propelled drive is money well spent.
What you are paying for
Self-propelled drive does not improve the cut. It saves your legs. That matters more than people expect after several long passes through thick grass or a trip from the front yard to the back.
When a push mower is the better buy
If your lawn is small, level, and easy to turn around in, I would save the money. A lighter mower is easier to maneuver around beds and store in a tight shed. Paying for drive you barely use is overkill.
When self-propelled is worth it
I would choose it for a half-acre-class mowing job, a long route, or regular slopes. The tradeoff is added cost and another system to maintain, but that is easier to live with than dreading the weekly push.
