How to Choose a Lawn Mower for a Sloped Yard

For a gently to moderately sloped lawn, I would start with a self-propelled walk-behind mower. The drive system matters because it saves effort going uphill, but control still matters more than finishing a pass quickly.
Prioritize control over speed
Rear-wheel drive deserves attention because your weight shifts toward the rear while moving uphill. That does not make a mower safe on every grade. Wet grass, ruts, loose debris, and a slope that feels unstable on foot are all reasons to stop.
Size and weight matter
A wide, heavy mower may reduce passes but can be more difficult to turn at the end of a slope. Choose a deck size and mower weight you can consistently manage.
