Toro Lawn Mowers & Yard Equipment: Pros, Cons, and Real Reviews
Where Toro makes sense for mowing, trimming, and leaf cleanup—and the ownership details to check before choosing a battery system.

Toro is worth considering if you want a self-propelled mower and a practical way to add yard tools around it. But a gas Recycler, a 60V Super Recycler, and a corded leaf vacuum solve different problems. Buying the brand is only the beginning of the decision.
This is a researched buying guide, not our own hands-on test. Below, manufacturer specifications are separate from published testing and linked Reddit owner reports. The owner accounts are self-reported experiences; we have not verified purchases or repair histories, and they do not establish a brand-wide reliability rate.
Which Toro equipment fits your yard?
| Your main job | Where I would start | Main advantage | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular walk-behind mowing without gasoline | A Toro 60V mower with an appropriately sized battery kit | Push-button operation and a battery platform for other tools | Runtime, charging, and eventual battery replacement |
| Longer mowing sessions with an established fuel routine | Compare Toro gas walk-behind models | Refueling can make extended sessions simpler to plan | Engine servicing, fuel storage, exhaust, and noise |
| A premium walk-behind mowing experience | Super Recycler, checking the exact gas or battery model | Deck and drive features deserve a closer look | Paying more does not automatically solve lawn-size or cut-quality problems |
| Grass along fences and beds | Toro 60V string trimmer | Cord-free trimming; compatible batteries can serve multiple jobs | Tool balance changes with battery size |
| Moving leaves around a property | A Toro 60V blower sized for the workload | Freedom to move without dragging a cord | Include leaf-season battery demand in the budget |
| Collecting leaves close to power | UltraPlus 51621 corded blower/vacuum | Blowing and collection in one machine | Cord management, conversion, and repeated bag emptying |
These are starting points, not a claim that one Toro model suits every yard. Compare the full purchase against the time and effort your current routine takes.
Toro gas versus battery lawn mowers
The strongest reason to choose battery is the weekly routine. Charging a pack can be easier than managing gasoline and a small engine, especially if the mower also starts a collection of compatible handheld tools. It still needs blade care, cleaning, and maintenance specified in its manual.
The strongest reason to consider gas is how you handle longer sessions. If stopping to charge or buying additional large packs would be frustrating, compare a gas mower’s complete ownership cost. That includes servicing and fuel handling, not just the mower price. Our electric versus gas lawn mower guide goes deeper into those tradeoffs.
For either type, try the self-propel controls, turning, and pulling back around obstacles. A drive system that feels comfortable on a straight run may take practice in tight corners. Measure the gate and storage space, and choose equipment appropriate for your terrain under its operating instructions.
A specific battery option: the 21-inch Super Recycler
Toro lists the 21568 Super Recycler kit with a 21-inch aluminum deck, Personal Pace rear-wheel drive, a 7.5Ah battery, and a charger. Its appeal is the combination of mowing features and battery operation. The four-point height adjustment is also worth trying before purchase.
The important shopping distinction is kit versus tool-only. The Amazon mower offer below says battery and charger are not included. Do not compare that price directly with the complete 21568 kit. Our Super Recycler buying review explains the package differences in more detail.
I would shortlist it for someone who values the walk-behind mowing experience and can budget enough battery capacity for the actual lawn. I would pause if the purchase only works financially when one pack achieves an advertised maximum every time.
String trimmers and the Toro 60V system
The Toro 51830 string trimmer offers adjustable 14- or 16-inch cutting width and two speed ranges. Toro lists that kit with a 2.5Ah battery and charger. The same page identifies it as part of the 60V Flex-Force system; confirm the recommended battery and charger for each tool you buy.
The advantage: after choosing a compatible mower, a trimmer can make better use of the batteries and charging setup you already own. The drawback: a large mower pack may be less pleasant to carry on a handheld tool. Sharing one pack also means mowing, trimming, and blowing compete for its remaining charge.
In Pro Tool Reviews’ July 2020 hands-on review of the 51830, Frank McCaulley liked its balance, line loading, and cutting performance on High. He found Low less convincing and reported nearly 45 minutes in his use. That is one older test with its own workload, not a runtime promise for every kit or later Toro trimmer.
For hedge trimming or occasional pruning, first check whether the tool’s reach, capacity, and working weight fit the job. A shared battery is a useful benefit, but it should not decide the purchase by itself. Use our battery lawn tool system guide to compare complete mower, trimmer, and blower baskets.
Leaf cleanup: cordless blower or corded UltraPlus?
A cordless blower is the direction I would investigate for scattered leaves and moving around a larger property. The UltraPlus 51621 is more interesting when collecting manageable piles is the problem and a suitable power outlet is close enough.
Toro’s 51621 product page describes a corded blower, vacuum, and shredder. It is a separate purchase from the 60V platform. The benefit is having blowing and collection available without buying mower batteries; the compromises are the extension cord and changing attachments between jobs.
Bob Vila’s October 2021 hands-on UltraPlus review reports easy pickup of dry leaves and slower progress through old, matted material. The tester also caused clogs with coarse debris and by pushing deeply into a pile, and criticized control placement and tube changes. That makes the review useful for planning the work, rather than treating the vacuum as an effortless answer to a whole autumn’s leaves.
See our Toro UltraPlus review for the collection routine and model details. The Amazon title and Toro page show different headline airspeed figures, so compare the exact listing and documentation instead of mixing specifications.

These examples include positive results and practical limitations. Older machines are identified as older experiences; they are not evidence that the current Amazon offer has identical performance.

|---|---|---|
| 2022 Super Recycler 60V discussion: original post and follow-ups | The owner praised Personal Pace and cut quality. A 7.5Ah pack initially lasted about 40 minutes on Max, requiring a swap. An edit reported finishing on Auto; later updates still needed extra capacity during heavy growth. | Leave battery margin for spring growth. One successful mow does not establish all-season runtime. This was a 2022 mower. |
| Same thread: Original-Track-4828’s later Recycler ownership comment | This commenter described three years with a different 21-inch Recycler and 6Ah battery, usually finishing their lot on one charge. They sometimes needed a spare and preferred their previous gas mower’s mulching. | Keep Recycler and Super Recycler experiences separate; ask about mulching as well as battery life. |
| UltraPlus 51621 owner in a leaf-collection discussion | Despite the thread’s WORX title, a commenter explicitly owned the Toro 51621. They liked its fine shredding but still emptied the bag frequently when vacuuming large piles. | Collection capacity and handling can matter as much as suction. Read the Toro comment, not the thread title alone. |
I would use these accounts to form questions for a seller or local service shop. They support a closer look at runtime, cut finish, and collection effort; they do not justify calling every Toro dependable or every battery short-lived.
Amazon listings and what is included
The two listings below were checked during research on October 11, 2026. The mower excludes its battery and charger; the leaf vacuum is corded. Check the selected variation, seller, included accessories, delivery terms, and current availability before ordering. No price or stock level is guaranteed here.
For the mower, compare the tool-only offer plus a suitable battery and charger against a complete kit from a local dealer. For the vacuum, include any required outdoor extension cord selected to the manual’s requirements. I have kept the trimmer linked to Toro’s product information because I could not confirm a matching Amazon product listing during this check.

Check current price at AmazonIs Toro the right brand to commit to?
I would start with a Toro mower if its controls and cut-focused features suit the lawn, then add a trimmer or blower as each job requires. Existing compatible batteries can strengthen that choice. A working gas mower plus a corded leaf vacuum can also be a sensible combination without a platform purchase.
Before committing, compare the total basket, ask who handles service locally, and find out what happens if a battery or mower needs repair during the growing season. Buy enough capacity for your routine, and keep the option of choosing a different brand for a tool Toro does not fit as well.
